CHAPTER 17

His grandfather’s guess that Lilith had set her sights elsewhere for the time being proved accurate a few days later, and she appeared to have moved on from their immediate area.

There had been sightings of her in cities and towns as she steadily made her way towards the coastline. Arnet, a mage from the council, had fled to the coastal region weeks ago. But the path of havoc Lilith was leaving in her wake showed she had her sights set on the older man. He had been warned and was staying in an undisclosed bunker that was supposed to be secure. Caleb didn’t hold out much hope for him. What’s more, he wasn’t sure if he even wanted to after learning what the Flame had subjected their society to.

He immediately felt like a hypocrite because he knew he would do anything to keep his own family safe, including his pops, who was the fucking boss of the secret society. He was still struggling greatly with what he had learned, as well as keeping it from Nix.

When Nix had met Gideon and asked only a few questions, not pressing for details, Caleb didn’t know whether to be relieved or disappointed. He had made his pops promise to answer anything and everything with full transparency. He had also sworn to himself that he would not lie to her if she questioned him outright. But as time moved on and they became closer and closer, he couldn't deny he was terrified. Not of her learning the truth necessarily, although that would have huge ramifications as well. But he was more terrified of what it would mean for them. She had come to mean more to him than he had ever expected in such a short amount of time. It shouldn’t be possible, but he was steadily falling in love with her.

He looked across the training arena where Nix was in a serious discussion with General Cale, their squadron’s superior. The day after Nix had met his pops, she had accompanied them to the Isa base where she had met the only other member of the Mage Council who had stayed in the city. Three others had been killed and two others were in hiding. She had also met Caleb’s commanding officers and had the opportunity to undertake some training with the squadron, and to help formulate military plans.

Not that she really needed the training, Caleb thought with pride as he watched her hold her own, both physically as well as intellectually, with his superiors. Remi’s training had indeed been extensive. And coupled with her innate powers and leadership qualities, she was a force to be reckoned with.

“It’s not really offensive …” Nix was saying as he made his way over. “But it’s not a defensive magic either. It’s kind of a mix of both. From all the reports, I’ve noticed that Lilith likes to drop energy bombs. It’s something she can do from a distance and it’s also something she can program. Which means she can target victims with great accuracy.
